How to tell if your 925 silver is real
Contents
Real 925 silver is an investment. But not every silver-looking piece on the market actually meets the 92.5% standard. Here are five quick, non-destructive tests to verify what you have.
1. Look for the hallmark
Every legitimate sterling silver piece carries a stamped mark: 925, .925, S925, or the word sterling. It usually sits on the clasp of a chain, the inside of a ring, or the back of an earring. No stamp means no guarantee — though a stamp alone doesn’t guarantee it either (counterfeiters stamp too).
2. The magnet test
Silver is not magnetic. Bring a strong magnet (a neodymium one works best) close to the piece:
- If it doesn’t stick, you passed the first test.
- If it sticks or feels pulled, the core is another metal — usually steel or iron with a silver plating.
3. The white cloth test
Rub the piece gently with a clean white cloth. Real silver leaves a black mark on the cloth (natural silver oxide). If there’s no trace, it’s probably a different metal.
4. The sound
Drop the piece onto a hard surface — a wooden table works. 925 silver produces a clear, long ring, almost musical. Cheap metals sound duller and shorter.
5. The ice test
Silver is one of the best thermal conductors known. Place an ice cube on the piece: real silver melts the ice noticeably faster than any imitation. This is the hardest test to fake.
Still unsure?
A professional jeweler can do a definitive acid test with a drop of nitric acid in a hidden spot — the color of the reaction instantly identifies the metal. Any trusted jewelry shop does this for a token fee.
